Biography

Born in Klagenfurt, Maximilian Khevenhüller spent his formative years in Austria and Spain. His journey into music began at the age of five with his first encouragement, although he did not commence regular piano lessons until three years later. From an early age, he displayed a keen interest in composition, creating a series of piano pieces that showcased his budding talent.

Maximilian received his musical training at the Katarina Gurska School of Music in Madrid and the Conservatory of Klagenfurt. His piano teachers included noteworthy figures such as Yuri Ananiev, Alexei Kornienko, and Paul Gulda. Additionally, he enriched his education by attending masterclasses with renowned instructors like Paul Badura-Skoda, Hartmut Höll, and Elisabeth Leonskaja.

Khevenhüller has performed at prestigious venues including the Konzerthaus in Klagenfurt, the Musikverein in Vienna, the Hofburg in Vienna, the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid, the Teatro Monumental in Madrid, Wigmore Hall in London, and has appeared on Spanish television (TVE).

After completing his basic military training, Khevenhüller became a member of the Vienna Gardemusik, where he played in its Big Band and various jazz formations, further broadening his musical experience.

In the autumn of 2013, he began studying Physics and Mathematics at ETH Zurich while simultaneously pursuing composition at the Private University of Music and Art in the City of Vienna from 2017 onwards. His interest in film music was sparked during this time, leading him to participate in masterclasses focusing on cinematic composition techniques with luminaries such as Christopher Young, Derek Gleeson, Evan Evans, Gary Yershon, John Lunn, Conrad Pope, and Hans Zimmer.

Throughout his composition studies, Khevenhüller regularly attended chamber music classes at the University of Music and Arts in Vienna under Christoph Eggner and spent a year abroad at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki with Marko Ylönen and Ilmo Ranta.

From 2021 to 2023, Maximilian completed his master’s degree in collaborative piano at the Royal Academy of Music in London, guided by Michael Dussek and Joseph Middleton. Following this, he served as an assistant to the choir and orchestra conductor José María Álvarez and held the position of associate artistic director at MUSIC’us in Madrid, where he frequently collaborated with the Choir of the CEU University.

In addition to his work with chamber music concerts and accompanying opera singers at La Favorita in Madrid, Khevenhüller is passionate about promoting the fine arts by integrating music with various artistic forms and presenting them in broader contexts. Since September 2025, he has been freelancing on several projects, with mentorship from Sophie Rachlin beginning in January 2025. He is also in the process of founding his own international Choir of the Order of Malta, with a strong commitment to promoting the practice of sacred music for the Catholic liturgy.

Projects

Besides his activities as a solist and conductor, Maximilian is also an active chamber musician in diverse formations. His regular chamber music partners include the pianists Kit Armstrong and Clara Isabella Siegle, the violinist Muriel Oberhofer ("Duo Turico") and the cellist Fermín Villanueva. As a chamber musician, Khevenhüller has performed in the UK, Austria, Spain and Greece in prestigious venues such as the Wigmore Hall in London and the Musikverein in Vienna. The season 2024/25 will include chamber music performances in Madrid, Paris and Vienna as well as duo performance in the "Trigonale" Festival in Austria. Maximilian also regularly collaborates with the "Fundación operística de Navarra", performing with opera singers in song and aria projects.
